Memoirs of a Ventriloquist

By John R. Schaibley
This is one of my all-time favorite autobiographies! Vaudeville-era vent John R. Schaibley (known variously as Johnny Raymond, Ray Raymond, Raymond & Ann, etc.) kept meticulous notes and diaries during his long career. Once retired, he went back through his archives and produced this fascinating account of he and his wife's careers as vaudeville ventriloquists from 1918 through 1958.
This is not a story of fame, but rather an autobiographic account of the harsh realities of "the road" and of making a living as a professional entertainer during the first half of the last century. This is a truly personal, engaging read about a slice of Americana that's seldom documented. Lots of black and white photos, etc. This is the first (and only) edition, published in 1985. Softcover. 227 pages.
BONUS – While they last, I'll include a very special “bookmark” with your order of “Memoirs of a Ventriloquist”. It's an original, vintage advertising postcard from “Raymond and Ann”....featuring them and their characters, “Woody” and “Goody”. Postally unused, this wonderful vintage piece of ventriloquiana is worth the price of the book all by itself!...but you'll get it for FREE with your order of “Memoirs of a Ventriloquist”. (Postcard measures 3-1/2” x 5-1/2”).
This outstanding book always gets my highest recommendation! Now out of print. You'll read it again and again and enjoy it each time! Limited supply. While they last, only...
